TOKYO -- Nippon Steel sees the acquisition of U.S. Steel -- a deal that was blocked last month by former President Joe Biden -- as a key option for countering the impact of tariffs planned by new President Donald Trump, an executive of the Japanese company said on Thursday.

Although Trump, who replaced Biden on Jan. 20, has delayed for one month the imposition of a 25% tariff on imports from Canada and Mexico he is keeping the option open.
