TOKYO -- Nippon Steel is seeking to own 100% of U.S. Steel in exchange for huge investments in the struggling steelmaker as the company makes a final push for the delayed acquisition to the Trump administration.

"If [U.S. Steel] had been under Nippon Steel's umbrella, they wouldn't be in the situation they're in currently," Vice Chairman Takahiro Mori told Nikkei. The U.S. company posted the second consecutive quarterly net loss in the January-March period.
