SYDNEY -- Qatar Airways intends to buy 25% of carrier Virgin Australia from U.S. private equity group Bain Capital, in a move that could boost competition in Australia's concentrated aviation sector by creating a stronger rival to national carrier Qantas.

The proposed acquisition, if approved by Australia's Foreign Investment Review Board and other regulators, would also see Virgin Australia resume long-haul flights, which the airline suspended after filing for bankruptcy in 2020 before being acquired by Bain.
