TOKYO -- As U.S. President Donald Trump hails the partnership between Nippon Steel and U.S. Steel, the Japanese steelmaker is scrambling to clear two key hurdles ahead of the June 18 deadline for the purchase.

Trump did not clarify the details of the deal in a speech to U.S. Steel workers at a rally in Pennsylvania on Friday.
