TOKYO -- Manufacturers from around the world are building factories in Bangladesh, tapping the cheap labor in the South Asian country while betting on swift growth in its consumer market.

Japanese consumer goods maker Lion in May began building a factory at the Bangladesh Special Economic Zone (BSEZ), about an hour's drive from the capital Dhaka. The 1.8 billion taka ($15.3 million) facility is to begin producing toothbrushes and dish soap at the end of 2025.
