GIFU, Japan -- Indoor tiles made in central Japan are seeing a surge in popularity overseas, as buyers in the U.S., Europe and the Middle East prize the ceramics for their artistry that distinguishes them from most mass-produced offerings.

The Tajimi area in Gifu prefecture, home to traditional pottery and ceramics referred to as Minoyaki (Mino ceramic ware), is Japan's biggest production center for tiles used mainly for home interiors. Minoyaki tiles are known for their unique color unevenness.
