MUMBAI -- The pet industry is booming in India as pet owners, particularly ones with deep pockets, eagerly spend on their animal companions.

"In the month since I adopted her, I've already visited this store four times and bought everything from a harness to treats," said Aditya, 29, the proud new owner of a cocker spaniel, at a Heads Up For Tails location in early January. He was having her groomed at the pet supplies store in an upscale residential area of Mumbai that day.
