NIIGATA, Japan -- The export of nishikigoi, or Japanese ornamental carp, to China is expected to resume after being effectively suspended since November 2023, as China has now approved six carp farms in Japan as quarantine facilities -- including four in Niigata prefecture. While each farm will resume shipments once preparations are complete, the screening and facility inspection requirements set by China have led some firms to forgo export plans.

The nishikigoi, which is said to have originated from Niigata prefecture, is Japan's national fish and there are more than 100 varieties. Known as "swimming jewels," they are beloved for their vibrant colors and patterns and traded in more than 60 countries and regions. Because of their nonterritorial, docile nature, they are also used as symbols of peace in international exchanges.
