Japan's unions to demand 4% pay raise in spring wage offensive

Companies contend that gaps in profitability argue against uniform pay increases

Japanese automakers are cautious about bumping up wages, despite making massive profits recently.

TOKYO -- The Japanese Trade Union Confederation, the national umbrella organization for labor unions known as Rengo, decided on Tuesday to demand an average wage hike of around 4% including age-linked annual raises in next year's "shunto" spring wage offensive.
