TOKYO -- Supply chain risks, anti-espionage legislation and rising geopolitical tensions are making Japanese companies less inclined to operate in China, a recent survey shows.

A total of 13,034 Japanese companies were doing business in the world's No. 2 economy as of June, according to a recent report by Tokyo-based research firm Teikoku Databank. That was down 9.4% from a peak in 2012, two years after the survey was first conducted.
