Casio developing smartwatches geared for the outdoors

Models optimized for cycling, snowboarding and even fishing

Casio will expand its lineup of smartwatches, taking advantage of its design expertise and experience collecting data with sensors.

TOKYO -- Casio Computer hopes to set itself apart in the increasingly competitive market for smartwatches by focusing on function over form, developing a line of 10 watches with features specifically tailored for five different outdoor activities.

The Japanese electronics maker has earmarked a development budget of 500 million yen to 1 billion yen ($4.5 million to $9 million) to develop smartwatches in basic and high-end models for trekking, canoeing/kayaking, fishing, cycling and skiing/snowboarding, each equipped with functions useful for that particular activity.
