GUANGZHOU -- CATL, the world's largest electric vehicle battery supplier, said Wednesday it received approval to start production at a plant in Germany that would be the company's first factory outside China.

Local authorities for the German state of Thuringia, the home of the new factory, granted CATL the go-ahead on Monday to produce battery cells at a plant whose construction is nearly completed. Mass production is due to start as soon as the end of the year.
