NEW YORK -- Indian billionaire Gautam Adani was indicted on bribery charges in a U.S. federal court Wednesday, with prosecutors alleging the 62-year-old tycoon and other Indian executives promised more than $250 million to Indian government officials to secure solar energy contracts.

"As alleged, the defendants orchestrated an elaborate scheme to bribe Indian government officials to secure contracts worth billions of dollars," said Breon Peace, U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of New York, in a Justice Department statement.
