HONG KONG -- Alibaba Group will merge its domestic and international e-commerce groups into a single e-commerce business group as the conglomerate faces fierce competition at home and abroad amid China's weak consumption.

In an internal letter seen by Nikkei Asia on Thursday, Alibaba chief executive Eddie Wu said that the new business group will be led by Jiang Fan, who will report directly to Wu. The merged unit will include Taobao and Tmall Group, Alibaba International Digital Commerce, the 1688 Marketplace, Idle Fish and others.
