Japanese company readies an army of data scientists for autonomous age

Bridgestone already offers data-driven maintenance services for its mining tires.

TOKYO -- With autonomous driving and car sharing shaking up the very core of the automobile industry, the world's largest tire manufacturer Bridgestone is revving up its efforts on internet-connected "smart" tires.

The vehicles of the future -- known as CASE, or connected, autonomous, shared and electric vehicles -- are sending Bridgestone and rivals scrambling to build core income sources outside of conventional tire production to stay competitive.
