Idemitsu, BOE Technology mulling OLED tie-up

New display technology will be used in next iPhone

TOKYO -- Idemitsu Kosan is considering a partnership with China's BOE Technology Group to produce OLED display panels, the Japanese company said Wednesday.

China's leading display maker, Beijing-based BOE is working toward mass production of OLED screens at multiple domestics plants. It hopes to speed up its efforts by working with Idemitsu, which holds numerous patents on blue diodes used in the cutting-edge displays.

The Tokyo-based company already supplies OLED materials to South Korea's LG Display and Samsung Electronics. It is jointly developing OLED technology with LG as well. Idemitsu is looking to further expand its horizons with an eye on growing demand.

Compared with liquid crystal display screens, OLED panels are said to be lighter, thinner and have better image quality. Apple will be using the technology in its new iPhone set for release within the year.
