Indonesian brewer Bintang looks to soft drinks to build business with Muslims

JAKARTA -- Indonesia's largest brewer aims to diversify its revenue sources by building up its soft-drink business. Roughly 90% of Indonesia's population of 240 million are said to be Muslims, who for religious reasons are forbidden from consuming alcohol.

Multi Bintang Indonesia controls more than 50% of the domestic beer market with its Bintang brand of beer. The brewer was founded in 1929, when Indonesia was under the colonial rule of the Netherlands. It was listed on the Jakarta Stock Exchange in 1981.
