TOKYO -- Japan's SMC, a world leader in pneumatic parts, reached a market capitalization of over 4 trillion yen ($25.9 billion) by forgoing the usual Japanese strategy of focusing on manufacturing unique products, instead favoring general-purpose components that it delivers quickly.
SMC's main products are pneumatic actuators used in the control of factory robots. It holds a market share of over 60% in Japan and over 30% in North America for the parts.
