Company logs sixth year of record profit, but Beijing's e-commerce rules hamper growth

Sluggish sales of Merries diapers in China due to new e-commerce regulations apparently caused Kao to miss its profit target for 2018.

TOKYO -- Japanese consumer goods company Kao is expected to report an operating profit of around 210 billion yen ($1.9 billion) for 2018, a 3% increase and a sixth straight annual record.

But this figure falls short of the company's projection for 215 billion yen in profit amid a Chinese e-commerce regulation blamed for slowing diaper sales. Kao's revenue likely grew 2% to 1.52 trillion yen, below the planned 1.54 trillion yen.
