Maxell to rev up automotive lens output, seeking 50% sales boost

$7m investment in Malaysia spurred by rearview camera rules

Maxell will boost production of automotive lenses, such as for rearview cameras, at its Malaysia plant.

TOKYO -- Battery maker Maxell is bolstering its automotive lens operations that include products for LED headlights and cameras, driven by requirements for rearview camera installation and the growing popularity of self-driving cars.

The Japanese company will first invest about 1 billion yen ($7.37 million) in July to expand a factory in Malaysia to ramp up production. The aim is to boost sales to at least 15 billion yen in fiscal 2030, up 50% from the fiscal 2021 level.
