TOKYO -- Olympus on Friday announced that company veteran Stefan Kaufmann will take over as president and CEO of the Tokyo-based medical instrument maker in April as it seeks to expand into new devices and take on bigger global rivals.

Kaufmann, of Germany, is currently Olympus' chief administrative officer and has also served as chief strategy officer and chief transformation officer during his 20 years with the company.
