TOKYO -- Japan Display is still struggling to turn itself around. Despite large-scale restructuring last year, the world's largest manufacturer of liquid crystal display panels for smartphones needs investment to stay competitive and keep its main customer, Apple.

Talks underway with several investment groups are facing major headwinds, due in large part to the U.S.-China trade spat.
