MANILA -- Philippine Airlines on Monday named outsourcing industry veteran Gilbert Santa Maria as its new president and chief operating officer after weeks of speculation about billionaire Lucio Tan's succession plans for his airline.

Santa Maria is expected to begin work immediately at the loss-making carrier, whose multiple leadership changes over the last month worried some investors.
