Pioneer seeks help steering out of car navigation slump

KKR-backed Calsonic Kansei emerges as likely turnaround sponsor

Pioneer is in tie-up talks with potential partners as it seeks to catch up with the rapidly changing automotive electronics business.

TOKYO -- Struggling Japanese consumer electronics maker Pioneer has asked at least two companies, including autoparts supplier Calsonic Kansei, for financial help, people familiar with the matter said Wednesday.

Best known for audio equipment, Pioneer is believed to be considering spinning off some operations to a yet-to-be-created joint venture with Calsonic, which was acquired in March 2017 by U.S. private-equity firm Kohlberg Kravis Roberts.
