TSMC acquires Qualcomm facility for $85M

TAIPEI -- Apple supplier Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing said in a local exchange filing Wednesday it has reached an agreement with Qualcomm to purchase the U.S. mobile chipmaker's facility in the northern county of Taoyuan for $85 million.

    According to a source familiar with the deal, TSMC will turn the Qualcomm plant, which churns out display products using the U.S. company's mirasol technologies, into an advanced packaging facility.

     "TSMC aims to bolster its partnership with Qualcomm, a major client, with the purchase at a time when the U.S. company is looking to get out of the mirasol display business," Carlos Peng, an analyst with Fubon Securities, said. "TSMC is not really going to invest significantly in advanced packaging."
