Toyota on track to sell over 10m cars for fourth year

Stays neck and neck with VW as China risks loom

The new Toyota C-HR at the Los Angeles Auto Show in November.

NAGOYA -- Toyota Motor's global sales are expected to top 10 million vehicles for a fourth consecutive year in 2016, keeping the Japanese automaker on a par with German rival Volkswagen as the two vie for the top spot.

Toyota had seen total sales for the Toyota and Lexus brands -- the main figure watched by parts makers and industry players -- staying flat at 9.15 million. Actual sales grew 0.2% on the year for the 10 months through October. Toyota is expected to raise its 2017 projection above the unofficial figure of roughly 9.4 million that it gave to suppliers in the summer.
