Yamato Transport workers seek relief amid labor crunch

Union wants limits on package volume as delivery demand surges

Yamato Transport is trying to address its perennial labor shortage.

TOKYO -- Workers at Yamato Transport are asking the shipping company to curb the number of packages it delivers as surging demand and a shortage of manpower strain the workforce.

The union representing Yamato employees has asked management to maintain package volume at fiscal 2016 levels for the year beginning in April, arguing long work hours have become the norm and "workers have been stretched to their limits." Management is expected to comply.
