OSAKA -- Faced with a shrinking population back home, leading Japanese homebuilders have taken their rivalry to some of the U.S.'s biggest housing markets.

Sekisui House, Daiwa House Industry and Sumitomo Forestry together sold around 30,000 homes in the U.S. in fiscal 2023, about 30% more than in Japan.
