TOKYO -- Japanese general contractor Shimizu is stepping up efforts to increase orders from non-Japanese companies in the U.S., including through acquiring a controlling stake in a New York construction company.

In late January, Shimizu purchased a 51% stake in Cross Management Corporation through an American unit for a sum estimated at billions of yen (1 billion yen equals $6.7 million).
