SEOUL/ISTANBUL -- South Korean general contractors once scooped up overseas projects by constantly underbidding rivals. Now those companies have come to lean on their technical prowess to set them apart.

The Canakkale 1915 Bridge over the Dardanelles in Turkey's northwest is the world's longest suspension bridge and is due to open next month. With the longest span measuring 2,023 meters, the bridge will outstrip the previous record holder -- Akashi Kaikyo Bridge in Kobe, Japan -- by more than 30 meters.
