TOKYO -- Japanese health and beauty company Kao is shaking up its hair care business with a high-end line as it loses ground to newer brands, moving away from the mass-market products that made it a household name.

A new luxury hair care brand, The Answer, will be launched Nov. 2, Kao announced Thursday. The brand's shampoo and conditioner will each be priced at 1,760 yen ($12), about double the company's standard products.
