OSAKA -- The operator of Universal Studios Japan will tap into the popularity of Minions, the characters from the "Despicable Me" animated movie series, by creating an attraction based on them.
Osaka-based USJ said Wednesday that the attraction, Minion Park, will open in the first half of 2017. Investment is estimated at about 10 billion yen ($96.7 million).
Minion Park will center on a ride starring the circular yellow creatures clad in overalls and goggles. Minion-themed gift shops and eateries will be set up as well.
Visitors to Universal Studios Japan increased by 500,000 in the April-September half to a record 7 million.
