Seven-Eleven app to show product info in multiple languages

Product information in 15 languages can be displayed via an app developed by Seven & i and NTT.

TOKYO -- Seven & i Holdings and Nippon Telegraph and Telephone are jointly developing a smartphone app that displays product information of goods sold in convenience stores in 15 languages, including English and Chinese.

Listing detailed product information in multiple languages on packaging is difficult since space is limited. The app will be tested in Tokyo from this month through January. The service for Seven-Eleven stores is expected to be launched during the fiscal year starting March 2017.

With the app, the convenience store operator aims to attract tourists and consumers concerned with food safety. Seven & i hopes to win business from foreign tourists, especially as recent purchasing patterns show that more are buying daily consumables rather than luxury goods.

The app will display ingredients, possible allergens, and product details after the customer takes a photo of a Seven & i watermark embedded within the logo on the packaging. Using the image, the app will search through Seven & i's database to display information related to the product. The app will employ an NTT technology that can identify photographs of 3-D objects taken from any angle.

Seven & i will also consider including consumers' comments about products, as well as information on special campaigns, in the app.
