Japan's ANA ties up with midtier Shanghai airline Juneyao

Code-share flights will target Japanese business travelers and Chinese tourists

Flights connecting Tokyo and Shanghai will be part of the code-share arrangement.

TOKYO -- All Nippon Airways debuts a code-sharing arrangement March 25 with Shanghai-based Juneyao Airlines, hoping to capture strong demand for inbound tourism to Japan as well as outbound business travel to China.

The Japanese airline's agreement with the midtier Chinese carrier covers international services between Shanghai and destinations in Japan such as Tokyo, Nagoya and the greater Osaka area. The deal extends to domestic routes as well, including Shanghai-Chongqing and Shanghai-Xi'an as well as Japanese flights linking the Osaka area to Tokyo and Okinawa. The two airlines also will link their mileage programs.

Business travelers show strong demand for routes connecting Shanghai and Japan's biggest cities. The two airlines also look to take advantage of the rising number of tourists visiting Japan.

The ANA Holdings unit has collaborated previously with bigger carriers such as United Airlines of the U.S. and Lufthansa Group of Germany, but the Japanese company now also focuses on smaller partners like Juneyao that offer a presence in particular areas. The Star Alliance network of airlines, which includes ANA, added Juneyao as its first connecting partner last year.
