TOKYO -- Toshiba will offer to purchase Alstom's power grid segment from General Electric once the U.S. company completes its acquisition of the French conglomerate's energy business, sources said Wednesday.

GE is proposing a $17 billion purchase of Alstom's energy unit, which includes fossil-fuel-fired power plants, renewable energy and power grid equipment. The operations boast sales of just over 2 trillion yen ($19.49 billion).
