TOKYO -- Japan will introduce a system as early as fiscal 2024 to certify "global universities," part of a goal to foster internationalization and send 500,000 Japanese students abroad annually by 2033.

Until now, there has been no system in place for the government to independently certify domestic universities that promote international initiatives. The certification will allow Japanese universities to boost exchange programs with prestigious foreign universities and draw in top students.
