SEOUL -- Samsung Electronics is setting up a unit to find future earnings pillars as the rise of Chinese competitors threatens the South Korean company's dominance in smartphones, appliances and displays.

Jun Young-hyun, who led the semiconductor memory division at Samsung Electronics and most recently was responsible for expanding the battery business as executive director at Samsung SDI, will head the new unit.
