TAINAN, Taiwan -- Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co., the world's largest contract chipmaker by market share, on Friday kicked off an advanced chip project worth a record $24 billion to assure future growth amid accelerating competition with its biggest rival, Samsung Electronics.
