BEIJING -- China is creating an overarching strategy for energy security under a law that takes effect Jan. 1, expanding its renewables capacity and increasing the resilience of its energy supply chains as Beijing faces tensions with Washington.

The law, enacted by the Standing Committee of China's National People's Congress legislature in early November, is designed to make the country more self-reliant by diversifying energy sources. It also creates a framework to stockpile and distribute energy in emergencies.
