Hitachi-GE Vernova venture gets approval for Canadian nuclear reactor

TOKYO -- A nuclear power venture between Japanese conglomerate Hitachi and U.S. energy equipment maker GE Vernova is set to build a next-generation small modular reactor (SMR) in Canada after receiving the green light from the Ontario government.

GE Vernova Hitachi Nuclear Energy will build a BWRX-300 reactor at the Darlington nuclear power site run by Ontario Power Generation, aiming to bring it online by the end of 2030. The SMR will have an output of 300 megawatts, enough to power 300,000 households.
