NEW DELHI -- The International Energy Agency has announced it will begin talks with India on its request to become a full member, taking note of the "strategic importance" of the world's most populous nation in dealing with energy and climate challenges.

The announcement was made following the IEA's two-day ministerial meeting and 50th anniversary events in Paris, which concluded Wednesday.
