TOKYO -- Japanese energy company JERA, trading house Mitsui & Co. and a U.S. manufacturer have decided to invest $4 billion for building what they say would be the world's largest ammonia plant in the southern state of Louisiana, they announced Wednesday.

The plant will produce 1.4 million tonnes of ammonia yearly, for export to Japan, elsewhere in Asia and Europe. The ammonia will be produced using natural gas as feedstock. The project includes capturing and storing the carbon dioxide emitted during production to reduce the environmental impact.
