TOKYO -- Japanese trading house Mitsui & Co. is partnering with Abu Dhabi National Oil Co. (ADNOC) to produce low-carbon ammonia in the United Arab Emirates starting in 2027, anticipating rising demand for the clean-burning fuel.

The ADNOC-led project, expected to cost more than 50 billion yen ($312 million), aims to produce 1 million tonnes of the fuel yearly. Output will likely be supplied to Japan and other Asian markets for use in ships and power plants. Other participants include South Korea's GS Energy.
