Japan's Mitsui to keep Sakhalin-2 stake under new Russian operator

Moscow has final say over who remains in LNG project vital to Japanese supply

Russia on Aug. 5 established a new domestic company to operate the Sakhalin-2 LNG project.

TOKYO -- Japanese trading house Mitsui & Co. will retain its stake in the Sakhalin-2 liquefied natural gas project under a new operator established by the Russian government, Nikkei has learned. 

Russia has been pressing two Japanese investors, Mitsui and Mitsubishi Corp., to decide whether to maintain their investments in the project.
