TOKYO -- Japan's Sekisui Chemical will mass-produce lightweight, flexible solar cells in a joint venture with the Development Bank of Japan, with government subsidies covering half the 314.5 billion yen ($1.99 billion) cost, the company said Thursday.

Sekisui Solar Film, to be launched in early January, will design, manufacture and sell perovskite cells, under license from Sekisui Chemical. The government-backed DBJ will hold a 14% stake, with Sekisui Chemical owning the rest. The arrangement is designed to reduce the risk of technology leaks.
