OSAKA -- Sumitomo Electric Industries will invest around 40 billion yen ($278 million) to expand production of power transmission lines in Japan as the government plans grid improvements for renewable energy.

A planned new factory will have a similar production capacity to existing plants in Japan, according to Sumitomo Electric President Osamu Inoue. This suggests that it could raise the company's domestic production capacity by around half or more.
