TOKYO -- As the Russian war in Ukraine squeezes global liquefied natural gas supply, Japanese resource traders have begun seeking alternative energy sources in Qatar, Indonesia and elsewhere to diversify procurement.

Trading house Mitsui & Co. is considering acquiring a stake in the North Field, off the coast of Qatar in the Persian Gulf, where two expansion projects are underway. Production at the added facilities is slated to start as early as 2026.
