KAOHSIUNG -- Taiwan has formally phased out nuclear power, as the island democracy's last reactor undergoes decommissioning on Saturday amid a growing debate about its energy security policy in the face of rising threats from China.

Commissioned in the 1980s, Maanshan Nuclear Power Plant in southern Pingtung county is being shut down in line with the longstanding policy of the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), which has been in power since 2016 and has pledged to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050.
