HANOI -- Vietnam Electricity has brought new transmission lines online, supplying more power from the central part of the country to the north's factories in hopes of averting more costly blackouts.

The state-owned enterprise finished the grid project in around half a year at the direction of Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh, local media report, instead of the three to four years that such improvements could take. Chinh attended the inauguration ceremony for the new lines Thursday.
