MediaTek eyes Internet of Things in Japan, smartphones in India

HSINCHU, Taiwan -- Chip designer MediaTek, the largest mobile phone chip provider to China, is targeting the "Internet of Things" and automotive sectors in Japan and focusing more on emerging markets including India and Southeast Asia as overall demand for smartphones softens.

     The Taiwanese company is best known for offering inexpensive turnkey solutions that help Chinese white box phone suppliers enter the business easily and compete with brand-name global rivals. MediaTek often is credited with the mobile phone boom in China over the past decade.
